What is cold water therapy?

Cold water therapy, which is also known as Cryotherapy is a therapy that involves immersing your body or parts of your body into a cold temperature. This type of therapy can be applied in numerous different ways and can have a lot of different benefits. The main aim is to activate the body’s natural healing abilities. This is incredible useful for someone who wants to over come a chronic illness, someone who would like to decrease or prevent inflammation around the body or would just like to promote overall well-being and health.

I will go into more detail over other posts but there are different methods you can choose from if you would like to look into cold water therapy. some of these include taking an ice bath, outdoor swimming, face immersion, cold showers and more.

The main goal of cold water therapy is to trigger the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve are the main nerves of your parasympathetic nervous system. Nobody can consciously control their vagus nerve that we know of as it controls the functions such as heart rate, digestion, the immune system, the pupils and lots more. I personally think a lot of external environmental factors and emotions do have a huge impact on it though.

You need to have a healthy balanced nervous system to live a healthy life. Stress in my opinion is a huge part of an unbalanced nervous system. Your parasympathetic nervous system is what slows down your heart rate, lowers our blood pressure, promotes digestion and helps us to relax.

Cold water therapy is one of the best ways to simulate the vagus nerve which then has a huge host of health benefits such as a stronger immune system, helps the lymphatic system, helps with sore muscles, helps reduce inflammation, increases dopamine levels, releases endorphins for well being and even is good on the skin for anti ageing and many more.

I will cover these in more detail in my other posts
